Every year on September 29, the World Heart Federation designates World Heart Day – an opportunity for all of us to reflect and pay more attention to the health of our hearts and the hearts of our loved ones.
In 2025, the theme “Don’t Miss a Beat” carries the message that every heartbeat is precious, and we can protect it through early prevention, timely detection, and proper treatment.
· Globally, cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) – such as hypertension, heart attack, stroke, and heart failure – are the leading cause of death, claiming more than 20 million lives every year.
· One in five people dies from CVD, a disease that kills more people than cancer and chronic respiratory illnesses combined.
· In Vietnam, over 200,000 people die from cardiovascular diseases each year, accounting for 39.5% of all deaths. Around 27.4% of adults are living with cardiovascular conditions, and the age of onset is becoming increasingly younger.
· The good news: Up to 80% of heart disease and stroke cases can be prevented if we take proactive steps to care for our heart health today.
Seek medical attention promptly if you or your loved ones experience:
· Chest pain, chest tightness, or shortness of breath on exertion.
· Rapid heartbeat, palpitations, or irregular heartbeat.
· Swelling of the legs, persistent fatigue.
· Dizziness or fainting without a clear cause.
1. Eat a balanced diet
· Reduce salt, limit fried foods and sugary products.
· Add more vegetables, fruits, fish, and whole grains.
2. Exercise regularly
· At least 30 minutes a day, 5 days per week.
· Suggested activities: walking, jogging, cycling, swimming, yoga.
3. Avoid harmful habits
· Say no to smoking.
· Limit alcohol consumption.
4. Manage stress
· Stay positive, relax with meditation, music, or conversations with loved ones.
5. Have regular health check-ups
· Monitor blood pressure, blood lipids, and blood glucose regularly.
· Follow medical treatment and attend check-ups as scheduled.
A healthy heart is the key to a fulfilling life.
· We can prevent cardiovascular disease starting today with small but consistent lifestyle changes.
· For those already diagnosed, it is essential to take medications as prescribed and attend follow-up appointments – as heart health management is a lifelong journey.
World Heart Day 29/09/2025 is a reminder for each of us to take time to care for our heart. Let’s share the message “Don’t Miss a Beat” with family, friends, and the community, so that no one misses a chance to live a healthier life every day.
